Hair, I Need Some Serious Help.

I don't talk about hair on here often because let's be honest,  I am lazy when it comes to my hair.  I wash it maybe 2-3 times a week and use no styling products.  On the days I don't wash it I just pull it back with a hair clip.  That is my standard daily look. I am really clueless about hair styling and products.

If we are being really honest I am also a total blondorexic, seriously my hair can never be blonde enough.  Its a sickness people.   I leave the salon with fresh highlights and still think my hair is brown. If I had lots of money I would totally get my roots touched up every other week.

These are a few of my favorite hair inspiration pictures.  I want my hair to look like these gals.  They all have the perfect long blonde hair that I want.

Now lets be real I know my hair will never look like Blake in the last picture, but I might can get close to the top four.

You might remember last year right around this time I chopped my hair into the long bob and while I loved it, I am ready for longer hair.  It is growing out but so slowly.

I look back at these pictures from right before Sterling was born and I want my hair to get that long again, or longer.  I have heard Biotin is really helpful for hair growth but I hate taking pills (meds or vitamins- I am weird I know).  I feel like my hair is at a stagnant point right now though and I want it to grow so it needs help.  I also wish it would thicken up and have more body.  My hair is very fine and thin.

Does anyone use the Mason Pearson Brush?  My mom just got one for Christmas and loves it.  I heard it helps massage the scalp and stimulate hair growth and renewal.

What Shampoos and Conditioners work best to provide volume and lasting cleanness?  I hate ones that make my hair get too greasy too quick.  I recently picked up the Loreal EverCreme Intense Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner and while I love how it smells and that it has no sulfates my hair was on the way to be greasy the day after I used it.  I need my washes to last longer.    I am cheap when it comes to hair products but maybe I need to splurge.

I have tried dried shampoo before but I am really not a fan.  It made my hair feel sticky and it was still greasy.  I tried the Tresemme and Aveeno ones and was not a fan.  Any Dry Shampoos you peeps swear by?  Because I hear that is the key to going several days with no washes.

I will leave you with this since are all friends here (although I am most likely going to regret posting this picture).   I died my hair really dark once.  I still cringe when I see these pictures.  It looks like I am wearing a wig, right?   I think I tore up most pictures from this dark hair stage but found this one.  I will never go dark again.  I felt so weird and so not me with dark hair.  I call it my dark period (ha).  So I obviously need some products to take care of my over colored hair because I am staying blonde!

Dish it to me ladies and tell me the secret to long healthy hair!

I use Biotin and I swear it works! My hair is sooo thin and fine and grows super slow usually, but seems to be a bit more speedy lately!

Ok. First of all. No one believes your BS plea for better hair. Your hair is GORG! I also lack in the product department. I wear my hair the exact same everyday. If it ain't broke...Now I have to say, I think you look GORG with dark hair. Very striking. I always love the blondey look though. Gwennie and Kristin C. have beautimous locks!

I love super blonde locks - kcav has pretty locks in that pic! I have had a Mason Pearson brush for years and love it!! I'm a big fan of kerastase products and I know you don't like taking meds but prenatal vitamins make my hair grow a ton!

I take biotin and can tell a huge difference-it improves the texture of my hair so much! And I love Alterna products.

I think that Dove makes a pretty good dry shampoo. I have a tried a few of them and like that one best. Sally Beauty supply also has a powder, can't remember the name that is pretty good.

My hair is the same as yours...thin and fine. After my last son was born, I went through a point where I literally felt like I was going bald, it got so thin and just didn't grow. I started taking prenatal vitamins again and that helped. I also ended up chopping some of it off to get the dead hair off, which apparently was preventing it from growing? My friend, who's a hairdresser, said hair goes through cycles like that. I'm telling you, prenatal vitamins!!!

Suave Professionals dry shampoo is awesome! It's so cheap too! I only wash my hair once a week...may sound gross but I have really thick and long hair and I like to take good care of it and washing it too much can really strip it and it keeps the ends looking good since I use a flat iron. So I bust out the Suave spray around day 5 and 6. Kenra products are amaze and they smell delicious! I use the hot spray when I flat iron or curl my hair.

I've heard Viviscal is significantly better at helping you grown your hair than Biotin. I've been taking Biotin for months and haven't seen too much of a difference but I think I'm going to try the Viviscal. It's expensive but should be worth it!

Oscar Blondi (at Sephora) is the best dry shampoo ever. It's a bit pricey, but I wash every other day and use the dry shampoo in between. I tried to go on the cheap with the Tresseme version and it bites big time...leaves my hair almost soggy and it looks gray since I can't shake it all off. Oscar Blondi is just spray and go - I swear by it! I know you don't like taking vitamins, but I found that prenatal vitamins help my hair grow the best (I have fast growing hair anyway; good for length bad for roots). My stylist also said giving yourself about a minute scalp massage helps the blood circulation to your hair follicles which stimulates growth! You are purty anyway your hair is! xo

I totally miss my long hair and your pictures make me want to go platinum again. Dangit! Have you tried Pureology products? They're semi-drying. I would love a Mason Pearson brush! Your mom is so drop dead gorgeous!

I have used about every dry shampoo on the market and keep coming back to Psssssstttt. It works so well and doesn't make my hair feel that gross. I usually wash it one day and am good the second day but need dry shampoo by third day. I have found that my head and shoulders shampoo and conditioner works best for keeping my grease away. Way better than my Alterna shampoo.

Julia Ryan said...

Oh the allure of the blonde hair...I miss it! You are such a pretty girl so you can clearly pull off any color, but let's be real. Blonde you should be.

As for products, I'm a big fan of aveda everything. Ask your stylist what products you should use. I also love matrix root lifter mouse. You can get it at sephora and will see a huge difference. And hair spray. GET YOU SOME!

I have that same brush and I'm obsessed with it. It's old and needs replacing though. Maybe that's why my hair grows so fast!

Ditto on the Pssst dry shampoo. It's cheap, smells good, and works better than any of the expensive ones I've tried. On the other hand, I use expensive shampoo and conditioner. I have super blonde highlighted hair as well. I use kerastase Bain de resistance and kerastase ciment antiusure as my daily shampoo and conditioner. When I fell my hair needs a blonde boost I use aveda blue Malvasia shampoo. The only hair product I use is kerastase ciment thermique which protects my hair from heat styling and makes it feel smooth and soft. Hope that helps!

I have been using biotin since my last pregnancy 19mo ago, and it works wonders!! I have had fine/thin hair always and after my pregnancy it was even worse. My doc recommended biotin..and I dread taking pills, too...but they are so tiny, it's almost like swallowing a mint..., they also make ones that dissolve on your tongue-cherry flavored-and it has helped my hair immensely. Now, my hair isn't super thick or anything I've ever dreamed of, but it has thickened a bit and stopped falling out as much. You do have to take a full bottle, 90 days, before you start to notice any changes. Good luck!!

I do blonde highlights every 6-8 weeks and swear by a few products: Pureology Hydrate Shampoo/Conditioner (although I have heard that their volume products are great & may be a better fit for you), Pureology Perfect 4 Platinum Miracle Filler Treatment, Bumble & Bumble Styling Creme, Josie Maran Aragan Oil, and L'Oreal EverStyle Alcohol-Free Root Lifting Spray. I don't use all of them at once but have found the right mix of the products to use depending upon where I am with my hair washing cycle. Good luck! It's an ever evolving process for me!

Prenatal vitamins will definitely help your hair grow long and strong quickly. Speaking of prenatals, when are you going to give Sterling a little brother or sister?

It looks like you have received several recommendations already for dry shampoo, but I swear by it. It's AMAZING and cheap. It's about $10 a bottle and right now, the only place I have found it is on amazon.com. It doesn't make your hair feel wet or greasy at all. In fact, I swear it is just baby powder in an aerosol can!

Paige said...

I am a huge lover of Kerastase shampoo!!! The bottle with the orange lid! It works wonders, especially if you don't need to wash your hair all that often, that's when you notice a huge difference with it! I have blonde hair too and find that my highlights hold up pretty well with it. Now, while it might be super expensive (check out Amazon or Target for a better deal), but it is totally worth every penny!! I am not a product person either, but I swear by this! Rusk "thick" spray is also a great volumizing spray!

I have to second the recommendation for Suave dry shampoo--it is one of the few hair products I buy from Target/drugstore. I also have blond hair that I um, rarely wash, and by the third day my roots look really dark and gross--this stuff actually makes them look blonder, which I love!! Plus it's only like $2...

Chicago Mom (Heather) said...

I love you with both hair colors!! I use cheap shampoo but the Redken line is really good too.

I thought I was the only person using the term blonderexic on the reg! I shout it at my stylist every time I am there! It is white blonde but looks black to me ha! I have hear Mane and Tail shampoo is great for helping hair grow and for making it fuller. I think it is around $5. Big Sexy makes a fantastic, lightweight and clear dry shampoo that isn't too expensive either. My stylist also told me that the more you wash your hair the more it can increase growth. I am blonderexic and trying to get my hair to grow out of a bob from last year too so I am going to try the mane and tail and more frequent washing (yeah right!)

I feel like I have tried EVERY dry shampoo on the market and I agree with you, the tressemme one SUCKS!

Here are my faves:

$ - Suave
$$ - Batiste
$$$ - Tigi Catwalk
$$$$ - Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray

Ok so the Oribe is amazing but WAY too expensive to justify. I would seriously give the Suave one a try (it comes in a silver bottle with a flourescent greenish/yellow cap). If you like the results, I'd say that the Tigi Catwalk is probably the most bang for your buck. I love the Batiste as well but I feel like its harder to find, however, it smells amazing (the BLUSH scent - pink bottle) and its only $8 (I think I got mine at Urban Outfitters of all places).

You have great hair! I'm jealous of your look!

You look great dark. I know you don't believe it, but you do (you know it is truth when it is coming from another blondwannabe). My all time favorite dry shampoo is Pssssst. You can get it at drugstores/Ulta. It is cheap and works really well. I only wash my hair twice per week. It also adds mega volume.

You will get hooked on Kerastase ($$$). I have also surprisingly liked Paul Mitchell products too (from the supermarket). I have really thick hair naturally, but most of the celebs in the photos use extensions to fill out (sad but true). I have had long hair ever since I graduated college- it is so under-rated!! I rarely have to get cuts and my husband likes it :) You can either go sleek and straight like Gwyn (not sure you need to iron) or pop a few hot rollers in for some curl.
PS- that dark photo is the bomb- you are looking a little Angelina Jolie :)

One thing that works for me is prenatal vitamins. I used them to help grow out my hair for my wedding. The only down side was that my now husband was totally freaked out when he saw them in my medicine cabinet. Haha!

Also I am committed to washing my hair every few days (washing every day is unimaginable to me!). I've tried every dry shampoo under the sun the two best I've Coe across are Pssst and baby powder. With baby powder I usually just buy the travel size bottle and sprinkle it on my roots or anywhere that looks greasy before bed. When I wake up in the morning it's absorbed any oil. I don't mind the smell of baby powder but my husband does. I've heard corn starch works just as well so I'm going to try tat next. Also, Pssst dry shampoo seems to volumize your hair which I LOVE because it helps to pump some life into my second (or third) day washed hair.

I swear by baby powder for hair grease, & it seriously gives my hair a boost. I have tried lots & lots of dried shampoos, & I'm not a fan. Sheer Blonde recently came out with some voluminous products, & I actually really like those......I use Fred Fekkai volumizing shampoo & conditioner. I like to think that it works, but who knows.

My hair is very thin/fine and it always looks dry to me. I started taking Biotin about two months ago and I can definitely tell a difference. I highlight my hair every 6-8 weeks. I change up my shampoo and conditioner and like Redken All Soft, Kerastase, Bumble and Bumble and Living Proof. For styling products I love the Shu Uemura, Kerastase, Moroccan Oil and Living Proof thickening cream. I also use the Oscar Blondi dry shampoo and the Loreal Cleansing Conditioner on days where I don't want to wash my hair :) I love the Aveda Air Control hairspray. I am a product junkie! lol Need to try one of the Mason brushes.

I think we have very similar hair-- mine is blonde (highlighted) and about the same length... I am also trying to grow it out and it does take forever! I use Kerestase products... they are $$ but I think they last a long time. I was using this one: http://www.amazon.com/Reflection-Miroir-Shampoo-Kerastase-Unisex/dp/B001BBLJTI and recently switched but I want to go back to it. I use this conditioner: http://www.kerastase-usa.com/LAIT-VOLUMACTIVE/LV00000,default,pd.html?start=2&cgid=regimen-treat . They have a volumizing shampoo too but I chose to use the color protecting one. I also have used the Tresemme dry shampoo and it's ok. I liked Oscar Blondi (http://www.sephora.com/pronto-dry-shampoo-spray-P193725?skuId=1043090 ) better but it is also $$. Hope that helps!

I have the same type of hair... fine, thin and stick straight! I use biotin and swear it makes my hair feel fuller and grow faster (I have been growing out bangs and desperate). Redken All soft is awesome on my hair, not too greasy or heavy. Prenatals are also thought to help with growing your hair out too... Good luck!

Girl, I have the same problem! I don't use any products on my hair, except for a bit of hairspray. I alternate between Morrocan Oil stamp/cond and Bed Head Moisturizing stamp/cond. That is it. I do love to change up my color. I used to be super blonde, then went dark, and now I am thinking of going back to blonde. I have found that adding long layers to my hair and just using some big hot rollers on the ends, make is look fuller. Oh and velcro rollers. The big kind. On top of my roll it all the way down to the root for body. Works too. When I have time :)

natasha {schue love} said...

I sprinkle in good old fashioned cornstarch baby powder (the cornstarch kind helps with static). Seems to work better than any dry shampoo! And I dyed my hair super dark once too and hated it! But you look so striking with dark hair! You def can pull off both! Not many women can!

I didn't like that shampoo either, but I really liked the ORANGE one. I can't remember which it is, but just look for the color, haha. I don't ever take meds/pills either, so I bought these calcium and vitamin d chocolate chews from target. I feel like I'm eating candy.

Try Shampowder. Great dry shampoo. Also I know you hate taking pills...but Vivsical is AMAZING. It is always in Vogue mag etc bc the models take it bc it makes their hair grow thick and long. It has changed my hair!

I have blonde, thin hair as well, and it takes me FOREVER to grow hair out. I wish I could help you with that, but I feel like once it get past my shoulders, that as long as it will grow.
I agree, dry shampoos are not for my hair. I have tried several kinds, and it leaves my hair more greasy than it was to begin with, and I have tried several brands. I think it must be the thin hair.
I will recommend spraying this one your hair: Oscar Blandi Pronto Texture & Volume Spray
It adds texture to your hair, and it can even make a wash last longer. ( at least for me!)

I have the MP brush and love it. I debated buying one for a long time because, let's face it, who buys a $200 hair brush? I finally bit the bullet and have to say it was worth it. My hair looks instantly better after I use it. It really tames flyaways and smooths out my hair. I'm also a big fan of Oscar Blandi Pronto Texture and Volume Spray. I have very fine, thin hair and it is the only product I have found that actually gives my hair volume. Plus, you use it on dry hair, so you can use it anytime, not just after washing.

I tried bumble and bumble hair powder in white. It is more expensive but now I can't stand to use anything else! It works not only on days you want to skip washing hair, but also lightens roots when they start to show (due to white color). I also use it to add volume to roots on clean hair now. Completely addicted. I have a two year old and this stuff has saved my life! Lets you skip the hair wash if you need to save time without looking gross the rest of the day. If you splurge you won't regret it.

I completely agree with the comment about Suave Dry Shampoo...especially the one with Keratin. It is so inexpensive ($2.99) and it works better than any I have tried. Corn starch is also a life saver for when it runs out!!
I also have fine hair, and swear by Aveda Phomollient styling foam. Put it on wet hair and it seriously seems to double the hair you have with out weighing it down.
Best of luck. Love you and your blog!

Try Coconut Oil. I swear it makes my hair grow like crazy. I will take a hot shower, get hair wet - DO NOT WASH, then slap on coconnut oil all over hair - wrap in towel and go to sleep. Wash out in the am (I use everything from Dove to Herbal Essence - I too will not spend $$ on shampoos), repeat and then condition as ususal. Also, not blowdrying your hair everytime you wash helps too. Do coconut treatment 1-2x per week....

ack -- all that gorgeous blonde hair!!! i've been growing mine out for a decade and it's still just past my shoulders. i think it constantly breaks...and I'm sure that has nothing to do with the level of bleach! :/ I'm not a frequent hair washer...and the only dry shampoo I'll use (besides a dusting of baby powder, followed by a shot with the blow dryer), is called Psssst. for reals. It's cheap, been around for 50 years, and looks so dated (but retro chic) I don't see it much in stores, so I buy it in bulk from drugstore.com. Trust.

Also, have you considered investing in a really nice blow dryer with a nozzle that directs the air? My hairdresser keeps telling me I need one to make my hair look blonder. She suggested Rusk W8less.

But thanks to some major TLC from my sis and from a product called Hair, Skin & Nails (http://www.cvs.com/shop/product-detail/Buy-One-Get-One-Free-Natures-Bounty-Hair-Skin-And-Nails-Tablets?skuId=898122) my hair is just like before but better! Not sure if anyone mentioned this but the most important thing for getting your hair to grow is regular trims every 4-6 weeks. If not your hair will just break on the ends and it takes longer to grow, but you probably already know this! I swear when I was in cosmetology school my hair grew so super fast, even though I kept it short, it is because I was always cutting it during school! For blonde hair, skip the dry shampoo, just use baby powder!

Unknown said...

I've never colored my hair (it's a virgin) so I can't help you in that department but I think blow drying it as little as possible really helps it to stay healthy and not get fried from all of the styling, etc! I used to not be a fan of dry shampoo either but now I have 2 favorites- Amika's dry shampoo and Oribe Texture spray is amazing. You should definitely give them a try! And for shampoo/conditioner I use the Organix brand, it smells delicious and doesn't break the bank!!

Taylor said...

ok so i swear by moroccan oil. my hair can never get long enough for me - a little bit on the ends goes a long way and helps with split ends so much to help it grow. its about $50 a bottle but a bottle will last you well over a year! and dry shampoo - bumble and bumble is by far the best I have found - the cheaper brands dont absorb the oil in my hair, and with that one my hair will look even better day 2 or 3 as long as I wear it wavy! and i agree.... i wish i could highlight every week!

Baby powder is a great way to stop your hair from getting greasy between washes. I sprinkle it on before bed, and it is usually all adsorbed when I getup the next morning. I have fine thin hair too, and root lifters are a great way to get more volume. Big sexy hair has a mousse root lifter that works good.

Anna @ Annglophile said...

I completely agree with B. Moffatt here! I've tried dry shampoos but I always go back to baby powder - it's what works the best, I swear! It also gives you some volume and it really gets all the greasiness out.

Batiste is the best dry shampoo by far!! I am in love with it and I strive for Gwen Stefani blonde hair. You can get it at Ulta!

Hey there! First and foremost, your hair is goregous! I totally feel you on this subject. I used to be a hair color-aholic and would go in every 13 days for a touch up. In addition to my habit being a bit spendy, it took a toll on my hair. What works great for me is biotin. In addition to biotin, not washing (gasp) my hair as often does wonders. Amanda Seyfried noted in a recent interview that her trick to fabulous hair is due to not washing it. Whoever invented dry shampoo is a genius! My mom is African American and although her hair isn't too kinky, she still has trouble growing it out. She deep conditions with a hair mask weekly, takes biotin, and her hair is longer and more healthy than ever.

Enjoy your day!

I am currently taking the Biotin and I can totally tell a difference in my nails, not sure about my hair. My hair grows fairly fast to begin with and it's pretty thick. I know shoot me right?

I use that Cleansing Conditioner in the brand you showed by Lo'real and I will be honest I feel like my hair is way more greasy than normal. Now, I've used their other products in the non-sulfate line and I really love them. The extra conditioning in the product you're using might be weighing your hair down AND making it greasier faster. Try a different formula and see how that works. I really love that shampoo line myself.

As far as dry shampoo goes I didn't like either one you listed either - I have been using Dove's dry shampoo lately and it seems to be working well.

I say try some Biotin - you can get it fairly cheap at Target and see how that works for you, switch up your shampoo and test it out.

Literally hair is all trial and error.

As far as super blonde, if I could try blonde I would. But I'm a true brunette almost black haired lady. Even highlights freak me out :)

The best dry shampoo for me is Oscar Blandi Volumizing Dry Shampoo Spray. It sprays on clear so you don't look like you're wearing powder on your scalp! :) It's in a brown can. THE best. I've tried any and all dry shampoo options and it's my fave.

Just repeating what many others have already said, but I guess it bears repeating if it's true...
Oscar Blandi Dry Shampoo (I use the powder, not the spray)
Pureology HydraLight Conditioner (SUPER detangling and lightweight- it's pretty pricey, but a bottle lasts FOREVER. A tiny bit goes a long way)
Redkin Volume Shampoo
Mason Pearson brush- I have one and like it. There are many different types for different hair, so go on their website and look them up. I ended up ordering mne from Nordstrom.
Finally, I know you don't like vitamins, but I take a multi everyday, and my hair and nails grow like crazy. Nice, but I need root touch-ups and manicures like mad.
Finally, I have hair just like yours- blonde, fine. And last but not least, I think you looked great with dark hair. Wish I had the balls to try it!

Girl, we have the same kind of hair, I can tell. I love mine long, but I hate that it looks flat all the time. It does not want to hold style at all. I do take Biotin...I actually love it. I'm like you - pills are not my friend. It does help me to take my pills at night...for some reason I'm not as "gaggy" then as first thing in the morning. You might try that and see if it works for you too? I've used oils in my hair (Moroccan, Argan, etc.) but it does mess with my skin on my shoulders and around my face (major breakouts)....so I don't do that too much. Really anything you can do to keep the ends from drying/breaking will help your hair stay healthy and grow long.

Anything Kerastase!! Also, Perfect Prenatal vitamins! Recommended on Goop. My hair has never been so long. They are expensive, but totally worth it! They also make you feel amazing because they are all natural with probiotics. I have so much energy since starting them. Your hair will grow!!!

I can't believe that you used to have black hair! Blond hair suits you like you were born a true blondie! ;)
