Mommy Confessions

Happy Friday Friends. Not going to lie this has been a long week with school being out three days. I know you people up North deal with snow all the time but Charleston shuts down over it.  I love being a mom so much but dang, the days can be really long sometimes especially when you can't leave your house.  Thank goodness we have a wedding this weekend so I get two nights out in a row!  That is unheard of and never happens.  I am ready to get dressed up and be wined and dined:)

Since I have been at my wits end lately I thought it would be fun to do some Mommy Confessions.  Now don't leave me alone feeling like the worst mom ever please leave a comment and tell me your confessions.  TGIF Friends.

1) I have not washed my hair in 4 days- yesterday morning Sterling actually told me I smelled.   Don't worry it is getting washed before the Rehearsal Dinner Tonight:)

2) I swore I would never ever let Sterling watch Spongebob and now it is all he watches- it guarantees me 30 minutes of silence which is pure bliss.

3) Sterling ate 3 lunchables yesterday one for breakfast and two for lunch. 3 lunchables how gross is that??

4) Whoever said that nursing burns calories and makes you drop the baby weight fast lied.   I am nursing round the clock and my weight ain't moving.  I actually gained two pounds from all the junk I ate during the snow days.

5) The past two days I started happy hour before 5.  Had to, is it sad having both kids at home leads me to want a glass of wine?  Case and point a little half glass while cooking.  4:00 is the new 5:00 for moms.

6) I have not exercised once since I had Frances and I was cleared too almost 4 weeks ago.  Every week I am like is it, then I make up excuses not.   I feel gross and want to workout but just cant find the time.

7) Yesterday at the bank our banker told Sterling "please be nice to your mommy and listen to her" because he was acting obnoxious.   I fear I have that kid who won't behave or listen to me in public.  You know the one where you look at the mom and feel both sorry for her and disgusted she cant get her kid to listen to her.

8) I have started making Sterling shower with me or Matt just so I don't have to do bath time.   I dread bath time especially because Sterling still cries every time we wash his hair.  He is getting ready to be 4 and cries over water in his eyes.

9)  I don't watch TV at night anymore.  I can't stand the noise.  Sterling talks all the time.  Seriously he is never quiet so now at night I need pure silence- I do make an exception for The Bachelor.

10)  Girl diapers are way harder to clean than boys.  I must use at least 10 wipes every time I change Frances trying to get her clean.

But at the end of the day long or not,  I sure do love these two and love being their mom.

and because I thought this was too true and too funny not to share.

These are thoughts all moms have. I only have a 16 month old, we moved from SoCal to the Midwest a month ago, and my husband is traveling more for work. I feel so overwhelmed and exhausted. I'm so glad I get to stay home now but at night, when I'm by myself it gets lonely and overwhelming. Thanks for keeping it honest.

Alyson said...

Aww! I remember those days. It is overwhelming. My son freaked out about the water in his eyes and I got this bath hat and it really works! http://www.amazon.com/KAIR-Cushioned-Shower-Shampoo-Shield/dp/B00A7W0WDQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1391172092&sr=8-1&keywords=bath+visor

Hang in there. It does get easier! Wine does help.

Haha! Love that bottom thought bubble picture! You aren't alone but you already know that! Yes, girls take tons of wiping to make sure you get all the crevices clean! The lunchables confession made me laugh out loud! TV is the best babysitter! Sometimes I catch myself talking to myself because I'm so lonely stuck in the house with a 3 year old day in and day out. Ha!

Hang in there girl! 4:00 is a totally acceptable time to start drinking when you're a mom. I hope that snow cleared up for you and you can get out today. I also didn't start to drop weight from nursing until I crossed the 4 month mark and then I suddenly lost 10lbs (back to pre baby weight) and once I got to 6 months I lost 8lbs more (so 8 under prebaby). But man it was exhausting to do it that long!

You are SO not alone! Some weeks I have to really sit and think about when the last time was that I washed my hair. If my husband is out of town, I always hand over my iPad in the mornings to the girls so that I can get ready for work with peace and quiet. And I'm definitely guilty of not only not watching TV but also turning off the radio in the car because I'm really cherishing any quiet moments that I can get to myself! Hang in there with the exercise and nursing - I was in your same boat and you look great and need to cut yourself some slack!

Liz said...

Hilarious! I love this and can totally sympathize. Our schools have a two our delay today and I seriously can't deal with it. Confession - I drank a whole bottle of champagne Wednesday night just to cope with the incessant chatting of "mom, mom, mom, stop talking, mom, mom...." :S

Jill said...

do you know what I discovered after I had Scarlett, Stila dry shampoo...its the best!!

everything you wrote today I have thought on many occasions too. There are good days and bad days and luckily a good glass of wine can make those bad days disappear!!

Laura said...

My almost four year old still hates getting his hair washed. We definitely don't do it everyday! When we do I have him hold a folded washcloth over his eyes and use this pitcher that I got at babies r us. Hard to describe but it has soft rubber on one side to make it easier to keep the water off their faces.

All moms have these feelings! Trust me, it's gets better! Being a mom may be the best job ever, but it is also the hardest.

Mel G said...

I love you Nat! These are ALL true for me. Especially the 4:00 is the new 5:00 for moms. Lastnight Adam commented on the amount of wine I have drank this week. Only one I disagree with is bath time. I love bath time because Colin wants to stay in for a long time and I can sit QUIETLY and read a mag or drink a glass of wine while he plays in the tub. And yes - TV is the BEST babysitter!

Amanda | Kids and Cabernet said...

I can sympathize with you on most of these! I love being a mom too, but boy does it leave me exhausted. Btw - my daughter is NEVER quiet either and still whines when water gets in her eyes too - drives me NUTS!!!! Also, 4:00 is the new 5:00, I'm guilty too! Xo hang in there. Have fun this weekend!!

Love your blog...I live in Mt.Pleasant and all three of my yahoos have been home for 3 days (1, 5, 8)! A schedule/routine saves our lives and especially with a newborn. You are a great mom and no need to ever question that or feel ashamed of survival techniques;) We all have them. Currently my 8 yr old is feeding and playing with the baby bc I am done in...she even changes her diaper. Her punishment bc she was disrespectful during the snow days was to watch the baby so I could catch a break....we do what works;) some days the goal is survival...and nothing more! Have a fun weekend!!!

These are too funny! I will say to you that I am the same way with BFing. I feel like when you're a skinnier person, your body actually wants you to hold onto the "extra" weight because that is your healthy weight for BFing. I have only ever lost a little weight in the beginning, and I think that just might have been the water weight anyway, and other than that, until I stopped BFing I wasn't able to lose the last bit of weight. This is my theory...when you're skinny, your body actually thinks your best weight is about 15 lbs more than you want it to be...when you're heavier, you will lose weight from BFing. I may be wrong, but so far amongst my friends and other women I know, my theory rings true. Go ahead and get back on the workouts though! That will help...but it will also make you want to eat more so of course just make the healthiest choices you can! xoxo

You're not alone! I have 2 kids, too (2.5 and 8 months) who I'm home with all day and my oldest doesn't nap anymore. It's definitely a challenge some days. Quiet time to yourself is always needed everyday! I joined a gym a couple months ago thinking I'd be there at least 3x/week. It's just not happening yet!

Oh you are so not alone. For number one dry shampoo - it has saved my life! And believe it or not, Dove. I love the Dove kind. Who knew?

I only have one kid. Desperately trying for number two and I definitely don't make life with one kid look easy so I know I'm really in for it if we get so blessed!

You are doing great. You look amazing!

Also, for these stuck in the house sort of days my three year old has LOVED any sort of baking (I actually pull it all out in little bowls while she naps to make it easier), she has loved painting, and we have made a bunch of winter stuff we found on pinterest - like Cloud Dough - soooo easy and she sat at the kitchen table for like an hour!! Or slime/goo - for some reason these sensory things seem to calm everyone down a notch!!

And yes, I thought 4 o'clock was the new 5 o'clock long before kids. Now I just know it's true :-)

Cheers and enjoy your weekend!!

First of all, I am dying over that thought bubble picture - it perfectly captures what runs through my mind on a daily basis!! Also, I am right there with you on the whole no TV thing. I would say at least 3-4 nights a week I find myself needing silence and just end up on the couch reading. You are not alone with any of your mom confessions. Definitely things we all experience - thanks for keeping it real!!!

Keely said...

Grrrrl, Im in it to win it with most your list! My Confessions would be the hair/ shower...you beat me with four days...3 was my max. My daughter Audrey has watched up to 3 movies in one day because I needed the hour or so of peace while my 6mth old daughter would nap and just to get somethings done. Last but not least I have been pumping then feeding my daughter because it is just easier for both of us but SOOO time consuming. Well pumping is the only time I check my blogs, online shop, FB. What the hell else do you do attached to that dame thing! lol
Thanks for keeping it real girl!

The bath hat that Alyson left is ingenious - I was recently telling my mom about my "invention" for water in the eyes because my now four year old didn't get over it until he started taking swim lessons and the 11 month old freaks out when I pour the water over her full head of hair. Apparently it's already been invented and I'm buying this, right now.

I work full time and have all of your thoughts when I am with my kids full time on the weekends - oy.

I have a glass of wine with my mom (who watches my kids) every day when I pick them up at my parents house. It's usually about 4:30. Totally acceptable.

Girl diapers and girl parts are so much more complicated and harder to change, for sure. We have gone through more wipes in 11 months for her than we probably did in 18 months when my son was little.

My four year old usually eats cereal every single night for dinner. There are the occasional exceptions when he has french fries and sometimes chicken nuggets.

I stopped breastfeeding the baby when she was 8 months (November 2013) and I thought I wasn't losing any baby weight while doing it, but the thing that I've discovered is I have gained five pounds since I quit breastfeeding. Ugh!

Have fun going out two nights in a row - that's amazing!

You are not alone, my sweet friend. I go through every emotion you are talking about and my hair is rarely clean and 5 o'clock is wine o'clock in my house.

You are so not alone! I make my younger two shower with us all the time. I have always hated bath time! I have 5 boys and with all of us stuck at home for three days, screen time limits went out the window! The first two days were fun, but day 3 was a test of wills. A lady at the post office told me once that my boys needed a good old fashioned spanking. They were being awful but it still made me mad (and embarrassed)!!

HAHA! This post is great! I am a stay at home Mom to a 3 month old and with the weather so chilly, I am indoors...a lot. Can't wait for summer! What is the red wine you are drinking? Any good? Looking for new kinds to try!

Love this! We are in Georgia and by yesterday I was ready to pull my hair out from being stuck inside. And I too gained two pounds from eating junk during our snowed in days!

OMG I'm with you on all of these. I didn't even lose weight with the second until I stopped nursing. My five year old still cries when we wash her hair. So ridiculous. Enjoy your weekend out, you deserve it!!!

Tracey @ Talkative*TLC said...

This is too funny! I can't relate just yet as I'm expecting my first this summer but the last photo - what moms thinks vs what dads think - had me cracking up. I'd imagine that will be quite true over here too! Have a great weekend!

Dina said...

Oh man how I can relate! We're in Atl and have had a total shutdown which is making me nuts! So many of those apply to us too-worried my 3.5 year old will be labeled a brat because when we're out in public, well, sometimes he is! Haven't exercised much since #2 because I have no idea when to fit it in, other than 5am and I'm not that kind of person, like some dedicated bloggers I read about! We don't do baths every night anymore, it's too much work! And tv, well, it is what it is, we're hooked on Disney Jr since the snow rolled in! Oh and I turn off all telephones, ringers, tvs, etc. at nap time, my 3.5 year old talks constantly and I need that mid day quiet, I don't even listen to the radio that much anymore! Here's to your 2 nights out, so wish I was you!

SaraRuth said...

Brilliant. Screen time limits are completely ignored since adding a newborn to the mix. TV is a free babysitter! Confession- I make my 3yr old skip a nap sometimes just so she'll conk out at 630pm and I have the whole night ahead of me. Ahhh bliss.

This post was awesome, and I totally needed this today! I completely understand about the lunchable thing and have definitely caved in to my daughter several times when she asks to eat one for breakfast. Thanks for sharing!!!

blants said...

I couldn't agree more! I keep thinking "I'm melting their brains with TV!" but it seems like whenever I put something on it's background noise for them and ten minutes later they are down on the floor playing. Regardless, I'm exhausted! We're up in New York and the weather has been all over the place -- 12 degrees one day, 40 the next -- so even if school is in session, everyone is sick. I have run out of fun ideas.

Also I totally agree about the BFing thing. I think your body hangs on to those last few pounds as insurance or something. Until you stop BFing completely, they'll linger. But I also think it's hard when you have a baby in the winter. Once spring comes you'll be able to be outside more and take nice long walks. That always helped me cram in exercise bc if I was lucky the baby would sleep!

Natalie, I usually never comment on your blog but am an avid reader and follower on Instagram. I am not a mother (yet) but love reading a new post of yours. This post is so refreshing and I think it sounds like you are an amazing mother!

My 4 year old is the same about washing her hair. This post is great and so real!! I work and I can't imagine how hard it is to stay at home with a newborn and a almost 4 year old kudos to you.. so that makes it perfectly fine to start happy hour at 4 or even 3! Anything after noon is good!! ha ha!

Hey Natalie! I'm not much of a commenter but have followed your blog for a while now. I felt the SAME way about bath time, hated it, so we started doing the same thing taking showers with my daughter. Eventually we started letting her take showers by herself and just reaching in to help a bit. Maybe try that?

Salem20 said...

I have enjoyed your blog so much an this is one if my favorite posts. I can relate so much. I have a 2.5 year old and a 13 month old. It can be so tough to be couped up in the house, I love when my son has speech therapy so we can get out. Also he is that kid who acts out I never thought I would have. I just ignore him, but it can be embarrassing and hard. I leave the tv on all day, that is the only way I get stuff done. I am able to type this thanks to Doc McStuffins. It is so tough with two, one seems like a breeze. About the baby weight, you look amazing. I take a walk every day and that helped me not sure if you have a double stroller or if Sterling is too old to be interested. Don't feel bad about the lunch able either, my son will only eat frozen chicken nuggets every day I kid you not.

Unknown said...

Love this. Reading this made me laugh and realize thank God I am not alone...And I still only have one kid! Thank you for sharing and helping us to remember we are not perfect and being a mommy is not easy, and wine is NECESSARY some days;)

Mom=wine! It's true, kids cause you to drink. I'm with you on the shower thing. I got so tired of bending over the bathtub and now it's takes 1/2 the time. My kids still don't like the water in their eyes either but pretending they're going thru a carwash helps a little. We also practice leaning our heads back before we get in. And I totally can appreciate your need for silence! I never knew that about myself until I had children. Maybe it wasn't true before I had children :)

Julia Ryan said...

I"m pretty sure I can say uh-huh to every one of those. I get two showers a week max unless I'm going somewhere special.

Sometimes a 3:30 wine glass is okay too :)

It is effing exhausting all the time. You just learn to live with it more. And drink more coffee.

I am so that mom in pubic and I don't care. My kids tend to listen to better to strangers anyway. If you can get them to behave in your tire showroom during an hour and half oil change, more power to you mister.

Jennifer @ Belclaire House said...

Oh wow, it's like you took the words right out of my mouth (esp the 4:00 wine). It's hard having two little ones at home. My son ate 4 honey sandwiches yesterday and watched more tv than I'm willing to admit. I also want to slap my husband when he wakes up in the morning and declares the baby slept through the night. Nope. He did not. But thanks for playing.

Christina said...

This is great. The exact same thing happened with my aunt and my cousin about Spongebob. I remember her being like "Ugh, that show is obnoxious" and fast forward a few months later she's like "Whatever, he's being quiet." hahaha

I am so glad to read this. You are so honest and I love that about you!

Sarah said...

Yes! I agree with all of these. The baby weight should start falling off around 5-6 months postpartum- this is when you will be burning the most calories- around 500 a day..... And yes! It's exhausting!

carolina postcard said...

So real and so glad I'm not alone! Sometimes it's like we're just surviving by the end of the day. Love!

TDW said...

Not only is yours quickly becoming my favorite blog, but this post was so what I needed! It is the most honest post I've read in a long time about motherhood. I have a 16 month old and work full time. There is nothing that can make you feel worse than being away from him all week and then getting frustrated with him on the weekend. You feel like you are expected to love every moment because you don't get to stay home with him, but sometimes, he makes it hard to do! Selfishly, some of the comments made me appreciate how well he sleeps and his bath time. I appreciate people's honesty that lets me be thankful for those things :) But as with everything regarding kids -- who knows what he'll be like in a few more months?! We moms need to stick together instead of competing with each other. Keep it up -- you're a great mommy!

Thank you for this post!!! Couldn't agree more! I'm 9mo pregnant and work full time. By the time I get home, I'm too exhausted to play with my 2 1/2 yr old daughter and feel so guilty. Plus she wears me out with the "mommy, mommy, mommy" and wanting to drag me everywhere. Sometimes I just tell her- "you have two parents, the other ones name is Daddy- go find him!" Love her to pieces but being a mom is exhausting! Loved this post!

Hang in there. You will get the hang of it. I have ONE child and she is 6 and I STILL have a hard time finding enough time to work out. And all I want is just 30 min. True be told, I just need to get out of bed about 40min earlier, but just can't seem to do it. My child has lived off of carrots, apple slices and sliced ham for the past several months b/c that is all she eats. I finally stopped fighting it.
It sounds like you are a great mom...and normal just like the rest of us.
Have a great time tonight and this weekend!

The other night my husband asked to watch Friday Night Lights together. I said no. I just wanted to sit in the rocker and sip wine in silence staring at nothing. Haha, it didn't even register that I was over stimulated from the day taking care of a 2.5 year old and 18 month old.
Thanks for the post!

I know that it's easier said than done, but hang in there! Crazy, Matthew hates washing his hair too, I always have to make some sort of deal with him so that he lets me...and he's the same at night, he talks and talks and talks, and runs and runs and runs around the house. I definitely don't know how it is with 2 kiddos, but I know how it is to be alone with one, so just hang in there, have your glass of wine, and try to get some me time (you should start running Natalie!!) I think you are in good company with all of these and they are certainly NOTHING to be ashamed of. I have a stepson (he's 11 now but I've been in his life since he was 4)so I know I only have a fractional understanding of this but it's no joke. One you didn't mention but I have is that I can't stand playing. I will color, draw pictures, watch movies, read books but this playing and pretending thing is for the birds. I confessed this to my mother one night on the phone and she matter of factly answered "Oh gosh, I hated playing with you girls too". Don't get me wrong, I love spending time with him but I just can't get into playing. Lucky for both of us his dad is super at it :). You're doing great. Don't beat yourself up so much.

Following your posts on Instagram and your blog you seem so put together all the time, I thought I was the bad mom for not having my sh*t together. Being a mom is the hardest job in the world as we all know but I don't think I ever thought it would be this hard. Doing what you can to get through the day is not only acceptable but necessary! Check out the book "sh*tty mom : the parenting guide for the rest of us" it's hilarious and says what every mom is thinking!

1. I haven't washed my hair in 5 days, thank goodness my baby is too little to tell me I smell bad & my husband is too smart!
2. Being a SAHM is REALLY hard, like harder than any job I've ever had
3. I don't exercise period
4. I wear the same thing sometimes 2-3 days in a row
5. It drives me crazy when my husband comes home & immediately turns on ESPN…the noise is like pins & needles in my ears!
I'm sure there are more but my mom brain won't let me recall them all!

Same issues you are dealing with, so are most moms. Personally, I share a lot of your pain. I feel guilty working out or trying to at least 3 days a week because I feel I am taking time away from my son who has told me, Mom all you do it work and exercise. It hurts because you want to be there with them but also need to take care of yourself. Yes, my son eats Lunchables and bless the hearts of the people that created them to make a quick snack for our kids especially in the lives of busy moms. My son is the same age as Sterling and hates water in his eyes too. So we shower with him as well and wash his hair while he stands with his head leaned back- much easier to deal with than soap getting in his eyes. I only have one child, so I can only imagine what it must be like to have 2. Keep doing what you are doing. You are a great mom. And always take time out for yourself, doing something for yourself even if it's a glass of wine at 4pm!

I am very late to this party, but can relate to so much of it and many of the comments! Motherhood is all about survival, sometimes. If you all make it out alive at the end of the day then it has been a success.

My boys are now 2 and 4 and have found myself this winter (we live in MD) saying (yelling) and doing things (tv on constantly), just to stay afloat. Ugh!

Sometimes I vacuum, just to drown out the constant talking from both of them. I love them both more than I could ever express, but for the love of all that is holy, sometimes I just wish they would be quiet!! I know they can't, so the vacuum helps and I am actually being productive. :)

One thing that I pull out when I am trying to make dinner (aka 'Crazy Ass Hour') is this amazing stuff from Brookstone…if you haven't heard of it, check it out:

Both of my kids love it and it keeps them entertained for sometimes an entire hour.

Anyway, love your blog for so many reasons and this post just makes me love it even more. Mommas need to stick together!
