Frequently Asked Questions

I often get questions on my blog and comments on instagram that I can't respond to because there is no email address associated with the comment.   Lately I have received many of the same questions and comments so I thought I would address them.  If you ever have a question just email me directly and I will do my best to respond fairly quickly.

ARE YOU COMPLETELY MEAT FREE NOW?
No, I am not completely meat free although I would say I eat vegetarian now 90% of the time.  I still eat fish and occasionally chicken.  Oh and Bacon, love my bacon. I really don't eat red meat anymore though.  Matt is completely meat free and has been for almost 3 months now. That is why the majority of the meals I cook and post lately are meat free.  and yes I feed the kids what we eat so they eat vegetarian the majority of the time too.
While I really don't miss meat it is sometimes hard to think of filling vegetarian meals so if you have any great recipes please do share.

HOW IS STERLING ADAPTING TO KINDERGARTEN?
Sterling's transition to kindergarten has gone so well.  I honestly worried more than I should have.  I think part of it was a part of me mourning the fact that he was growing up and turning into a big boy.  My heart broke that first day we dropped him off and he walked into school all by himself.  He seemed so old yet still so young and naive at the same time.  Luckily that afternoon when I picked  him up he raved about how much he loved school and how much more fun it was than his old school.  We are zoned for one of the best schools in Charleston so I didn't worry a bit about the quality of the school but he started not knowing one kid in his class.  I was worried about this and the longer hours too.  His previous school was just 3 hours. Thankfully kids are so resilient and he has made so many new friends.  The hardest part has been the early morning wake up.  I wake Sterling up at 6:30 every morning and it is a struggle to get him out of bed.  He complains every morning that it is too early.

WHY DON'T YOU CUT YOUR HAIR AND NOT DYE IT SO BLOND?
I will be the first to admit I don't have the best hair.   It is super fine and totally gets stringy when it gets too long.   But I just love long hair.  Hair is such a personal thing and different people like different styles and I prefer longer hair.  Lately however I have toyed with the idea of doing a long bob to switch things up.  I just need to get the courage to chop my hair.  I know it would be healthier.  So stay tuned a long Bob may be in my future.
I will most likely always have really blond hair.  I have had almost every hair color from dark brown, to red highlights to dark blonde.  But I just like my hair really blonde.  I can't explain it but my motto is the blonder the better- haha.

WHY DOES MATT WEAR DAD JEANS?
Matt wears "dad jeans" because he likes them and frankly I have no idea why this even bothers people.  Matt is not into fashion one bit, it is just not his thing.  He is happy as a clam in his old levis. I have tried to get him to branch out but he doesn't care to.

WHY DOES MATT NEVER SMILE IN PICTURES?
Matt does not like being photographed.  He actually prefers for the most part not to even be on my blog. I think many men probably prefer not to be photographed all the time.  We actually joke that Sterling has inherited the same deer caught in headlights look in photos that Matt often has.

HOW IS MATT'S BACK?
After Matt hurt his back last November, I have received so many sweet emails and comments wondering how he is doing.  After being laid up on his back for almost a month the end of last year including one scary visit to the ER he is doing better but not totally back to normal.   He ended up having three spinal injections which helped.  He still has numbness in his right leg and foot and is constantly worried about pulling out his back again.  He had an MRI and there is a lower back disc problem but of course our insurance won't cover surgery so we considering other options.  Right now he is doing well though and we pray there won't be a relapse.

HOW IS RODNEY FITTING IN?
Rodney is fitting in great with the family so far.  We have had some issues with his tail and the fact that he is runner.  If anyone opens the door even a little bit he tries to bolt out.  This has been the most challenging part and the fact that his tail is so crazy and frequently hits the kids. He also has crazy attachment issues and does not like to be left alone ever.  I think this my be why the other families gave him up and that has made his anxiety even worse.  Otherwise he is the sweetest dog.  He loves to be cuddled and lay his head in your lap.  I will be honest I never wanted to get a dog so quickly after Nelson died. I wanted to wait until the kids were older and able to help out some. I also felt like we didn't get to truly mourn Nelson but Matt was insistent on needing a new dog immediately to help with the grief.  It was hard on me the first few weeks because puppies are a handful.  That first week Rodney ate all our blinds and bathroom molding but he has since calmed down.  Now we can't imagine our family without him.

WHY SO MANY SPELLING AND GRAMMAR MISTAKES ON THE BLOG?
Clearly spelling and grammar is not my strong suit.  I try to use auto correct and proof read but I know there are still many mistakes.   I am usually trying to do my blog quickly because I am dealing with the kids hence the many mistakes.  I should do a better job proof reading but tending to the kids comes first.

WILL I HAVE A THIRD BABY?
I think we are most likely done with 2 kids. I go back and forth on this but Matt is fairly certain he just wants two kids, although I occasionally try to convince him otherwise:)
We are blessed with 2 healthy kids that keep me very busy so we are most likely done.  Plus my clock is ticking as I turn 36 next year.

HOW IS FRANCES MOON'S HEAD?
About 6 months ago we last met with our neurologist who measured Frances Moon's head and said it was evening out with her body.  He said this meant the fluid around the brain was draining on its own so no need to drain it.  He still asked us to monitor her and look for signs like being lethargic, vomiting, and not acting normal which would mean the fluid was leaking out.  Thankfully we have had no issues.  Frances is doing great and I think our sweet girl just has extra large head:)

FAVORITE PLACES TO SHOP FOR MATERNITY CLOTHES?
I get asked this question a lot and the truth is I did not buy many maternity clothes.  I just worked with what I had or bought a larger size in regular clothes.  I do recommend Forever 21 and Asos for cute inexpensive maternity clothes.  I also love the Hatch line carried at Shopbop.  It is clothing that can be worn while pregnant and afterwards as well.

FAVORITE TEQUILA?
Casamigos hands down is my favorite tequila.  George Clooney and Randy Gerber clearly know their tequila.  In fact I might just have to enjoy some this weekend!

HAPPY FRIDAY!

Natalie- you are so kind to answer some of people's rude questions. Why would people comment on Matt's jeans? RUDE! lol

I love your blond hair! I think you would look stunning with a bob like Caroline on The Ladies of London. Do you watch that show? Her hair is blond like yours and I love her cut.

I wish I could eat more vegetarian!

awesome answers. but seriously, some of these questions are so out of line, i hate to say but just being honest. dad jeans, blonde hair, grammar mistakes?! if they bother a reader, then maybe a reader shouldn't read the blog anymore (i hope the haters read this comment). too many haters. you go girl!

#1. can we hang out. you seem super fun. #2. ummm...do people really say stuff like that?! dad jeans? blond hair? umm...rude. i just recently discovered GOMI (get off my internets) and i was SHOCKED at the things people say about bloggers. they try to call it "snarking"...but it seems less snarky and more...just awful. ps. i recently did a true bob cut (after having long hair for always and i'm a full convert and totally in love. even my farmer doesn't mind it anymore! but i'll always be blonde. that's one thing my farmer hates when i change it. happy weekend!

Your hair would look so cute in a long bob! Such a great sport about answering so many questions that I can’t believe people even asked.. you’re a trooper lady!

I can't believe people would ask some of these things. I do love your answer about Matt's jeans though. My husband is the same way. He has levi's that are 20 years old and has absolutely no desire to shop until something is literally falling apart.

Haters gonna hate...right? I feel like you answered some questions that you should've just ignored. Anyone asking about "dad jeans" just has a stick up their ass. This blog is not about Matt and his fashion sense, am I right? I never knew about Frances Moon's head thing...I am so sorry about that, but so glad the doctor doesn't see a need to worry. She's so cute and I've never thought her head looked too big! My son started Kindergarten this year too...he's truly a big boy now! He's my 2nd, so this time around it was a little easier, but still hard to let go.

The jeans question made me laugh out loud. People are ridiculous!

I can't believe some of the questions people ask - you are kind for answering them honestly. I am a newish reader and really love your posts. I make the pad Thai recipe you posted a few months ago but we make it vegetarian. We increase the veggies - green beans, carrots, cabbage, radishes, broccoli, whatever! And I usually add some pan seared tofu too. You don't miss the chicken at all and you still get that delicious pad Thai sauce.

People have some crazy rude questions!! You are sweet to answer them, I would have just ignored.

Kerry Steele- Design du Monde said...

Those are some pretty rude questions! My husband would not speak to me for a week if I posted his picture anywhere, so I totally get that. Typos--seriously? You did a great job of answering these very graciously.

Hi Natalie,
I have been reading your big for awhile and think you are so refreshing. How funny to do an faq and include some of the tasteless questions you get. I was lol'ing! I have such a love/hate with the Internet! Love your blog! Holly from MN

Jenna said...

I agree with Allie -- people have some nerve! Dad jeans are kind of hot, am I right?! Especially when the dads wearing them are involved, hard-working, loving fathers and partners. Dad jeans for the win :) haha.

Aja said...

A lob would look GREAT on you! I have an SEC-grad former-frat-guy hubby and occasionally I can get him to wear nicer jeans to dinner, but he calls them his "tight" jeans (they are not skinny cut or anything) and takes them off as soon as possible. He prefers shorts and old Gator-colored polos. :)

You are so honest and open on your blog I can't believe people have more questions! Great news about F.M. and Matt. Hope both have no further health issues! I love your confidence and graciousness! Have a great weekend.

Absolutely love your honesty AND that you answered some of the not-as-nice questions! I love that you keep it real! Have a great weekend!

wow! I could never be a blogger, people can be so rude. Stay strong and keep blogging, I love what you do!

Unknown said...

I second and third the others. People have a nerve asking you questions about Matt's clothing, your hair,or spelling mistakes. Wow, some people have way too much time on their hands and certianly aren't very Chritian like. Keep up the good work and don't ever feel that you need to explain yourself or apologize.

Danielle said...

First of all, I can't believe people ask these ridiculous questions. You are so kind to take the time to answer them and to answer them with such a positive take! I have lots of favorite vegetarian recipes, so as I come across them I'll send them your way. I enjoy reading your blog. :)

Marychris said...

You should tell the people that ask about grammar mistakes and Matt to piss off. Seriously!??! WTH? But check out "Makeup by Tiffany D" on YouTube, if you wanna cut your hair, it would be cute like that. But it's great now! :)

Just echoing some of what people have said above...WHY are people so rude sometimes? I love your honesty and how you take it all in grace. You are far better than I would be. Happy Friday friend...hope you have a great weekend!! xx

I cannot BELIEVE some of the questions these people are asking you! I don’t write a blog, but I do follow several. I love bloggers’ recipes, tips and tricks for interior and home design, feeling like I’m getting ahead on fashion, and hearing about other people’s lives. It’s fun – it feels like I have old friends all over the U.S.

Because I don’t write a blog, I’m not as easy of a target of mean-spirited people so it literally shocks me when I read things like this post (or what people said about Sterling way back a year or so ago)! People are so MEAN, and it feels like they say such ugly things just to make themselves feel better.

You are an incredibly gracious person to put your life out there for any to see, and I just want to thank you for that. Your recipes literally make my husband happier and make other people think I know how to cook. Your upbeat personality that shines through on your blog is a bright spot on most days. Your hair is beautiful and fits your personality perfectly. I don’t think it’s stringy or too blonde at all. If YOU want to change it, then do so, but if you don’t want to, then leave it as is. Your husband’s clothing choices should be left alone and are completely inapplicable to your blog which has not, to this point, been a fashion blog for men. Regardless, he is adorable whether he is smiling, looking startled or wearing Levi’s. And honestly, who gives a SH*T if you have a few misspellings or grammatical errors on your blog. That’s the point – it’s YOUR blog so you can do/write/misspell whatever the H3LL you want! Your family seems so sweet. Please keep blogging, and thank you!

Really?!?!!? I am just shocked at these questions! You're a bigger person than I am to answer them! Who cares about you hair or Matt's dad jeans?!?! ;) If I could have blonde hair, I would! Have a great weekend!

Unknown said...

I just want to say that your blog is my very favorite and I read it first each day and look forward to it. You and your family are perfect! I cannot believe some of these questions!! Awful! You are so brave and strong to tackle them head on. You are beautiful - and so is your hair and Matt's jeans. Oh my gosh! Who cares what jeans your husband wears? I am in the same boat. I love fashion and my husband could care less, but I still love him and am proud to be seen with him no matter what he wears. Clearly you are a wonderful wife and mother and I love reading your blog. Much love!!!

I stumbled across this blog a few months back. I live in the Bahamas. I love your blog ! It is more than refreshing. I love the fact that you are so honest and real. I think this is why people like you and your blog. I can relate to so much things that you blog about. Cannot believe myself why people would even ask about Matt's jeans or anything else. Continue to keep it real.

I cut my hair last week to a long bob and love it. I dream of having thick long blonde hair so I completely understand you but never looks as good as I wish it did! and I agree with everyone you handled the questions with such grace, it so easy for people to sit behind a computer and judge others. I'm a vegetarian and both my kids are so I would LOVE you to post recipes. Thanks!!

Hilarious! Love that you called out the haters with your awesome answers! As my momma always says, "everything is a lesson, sometimes in how NOT to be"! I never want to be like these crazies who are so mean. Love your blog, love your recipes, love your hair. I'm still dying at the dad's jeans question! LOL! Happy Weekend...Cheers!

Love your blog and your answer to some crazy personal questions. Kill them with kindness.
As for Matt's back, the best thing is always the hardest - physical therapy and doing the exercises every single day. The problem with disc problems is you start feeling better and then stop doing the exercises, but the thing that is making you feel better is strengthening the muscles and taking some of the pressure off the discs. And of course, sitting is the enemy, and as an attorney I'm sure he spends most of his day sitting. Having a reminder on his phone or computer to get up once an hour and do some exercises is always helpful. All the best to you and your adorable family.

It makes me so sad that you get such obnoxious comments and questions, like the ones about your hair and about your husband... so silly. I love reading your blog!! Don't pay any attention to the nonsense!!

Allie said...

The Dad jeans comment made me LOL too!! I think that when you put yourself out there, you open yourself up to comments both positive and negative. Stating the obvious, but it just seems like it comes with the territory. And one of the reasons I enjoy your blog and come back to read every day is you seem to get that and take it in stride. Obviously I don't know you, but it seems that you are what you are and you don't go overboard trying to frost and filter your life for the sake of your blog. You definitely come across as genuine and that is refreshing among bloggers these days, so you go glenn coco :)
